Evolving a Classic: The Development of the New Oxbridge Flannel Collection

The Enduring Appeal of Flannel in Tailoring

Few cloths hold the enduring appeal of flannel. Its distinctive handle, rich appearance, and versatility have secured its place within tailoring for generations. Yet even the most established collections must evolve to reflect changing market demands and contemporary preferences.

Refining the Oxbridge Flannel Tailoring Cloth Collection for Modern Markets

As part of the latest development of the Oxbridge collection, our focus has been on refining and refreshing the offer while preserving the qualities that have made it a trusted choice for tailors and cloth merchants alike. The objective was clear: remain true to the fundamentals of an authentic flannel cloth while introducing a more considered design direction that reflects current market trends.

Balancing Traditional Tailoring with Contemporary Cloth Design

Throughout the development process, we examined both trend insights and wider industry movements. The result is a collection grounded in traditional tailoring principles, yet enhanced through thoughtful updates in colour and design. Rather than pursuing dramatic change, the emphasis has been on refinement—allowing the quality of the cloth, the balance of colour, and the strength of the designs to take centre stage.

New Chalk Stripe Flannel Designs for Contemporary Tailoring

At the heart of the collection is a worsted/woollen double-milled flannel that combines the best characteristics of both yarn systems. The double-milled finish raises and softens the wool fibres, creating the blind surface and luxurious handle expected from a premium flannel. At the same time, the combination of worsted and woollen yarns delivers an attractive balance of drape, durability, loft, and depth of colour.

Expanding Glen Check Flannel Patterns and Colourways

This construction provides an ideal foundation for design. Traditional chalk stripes remain an important feature of the collection, joined by the introduction of a wider stripe that offers a sophisticated interpretation of a tailoring classic. Presented in established tailoring shades alongside olive greens and rich browns, these designs bring subtle variety while remaining commercially relevant.

A Contemporary Colour Palette Inspired by Earthy Neutrals

The development process has also seen an expansion of traditional glen checks. Alongside classic black-and-white interpretations, the collection introduces a broader spectrum of colour combinations, providing greater flexibility for modern tailoring requirements while retaining the recognisable character of these enduring patterns.

Meeting the Needs of Today’s Tailors, Brands and Consumers

Plain cloths continue to play a significant role within Oxbridge, but here too the palette has evolved. While the original classic shades remain an important foundation, the collection now places greater emphasis on earthy neutrals and rustic undertones. Olive and khaki hues sit alongside cream and camel shades, creating a palette that feels contemporary without losing the timeless appeal expected from a flannel collection.

The Future of Luxury Flannel Cloth

The result is a refreshed Oxbridge collection that remains firmly rooted in traditional tailoring while responding to the changing needs of today’s market. It is an evolution rather than a reinvention—one that preserves the authenticity of the original concept while offering greater versatility, broader commercial appeal, and a colour direction that reflects the preferences of modern consumers, tailors, and brands.

As development continues, Oxbridge remains a celebration of what makes flannel such an enduring tailoring cloth: character, versatility, and timeless style.
